Art Works Chicago: John Himmelfarb
May 26th to September 26th, 2011

ABOUT THE ARTIST
John Himmelfarb was born in Chicago, IL into a family of artists where his interest in art and music was supported and encouraged. While pursuing a major in Architectural Sciences and Urban Planning at Harvard University, Himmelfarb recognized his drive to make art and decided to develop his career as an artist. He went on to receive both his BA and his MAT from Harvard University, and has since returned to the Midwest to live and work as an artist in his Chicago studio. He has taught and lectured extensively as a visiting artist around the country and has received grants from The Pollack-Krasner Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The Illinois Arts Council.
ABOUT THE ART
As seen in this exhibition, John Himmelfarb’s work encompasses a diverse range of media and styles—painting, printmaking, sculpture, tapestries, and ceramics. Seeing Himmelfarb’s artistic vision translated into these different forms allows the viewer to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the artist’s body of work.
Himmelfarb’s artistic exploration and connections within the art community brought him opportunities to work alongside other artists and develop his body of work through many different types of media. In addition to the paintings and drawings with which he launched his career, he began working with Tandem Press and Landfall Press to publish a series of fine art prints in the late 1970s. In the mid 1980s, he collaborated with Ruth Duckworth, leading to an increased presence of ceramics in his work. Recently, he has been working with Peruvian textile fabricators to adapt his paintings into wall-hanging tapestries.
Stylistically he has always drawn his inspiration from personal experience and interest. Music, having played a significant role in his life since childhood, appears in the rhythms of his marks and brushstrokes. Himmelfarb studied architecture and urban planning, an interest that can especially be seen in his Inland Romance Series. These prints and drawings are expressions of the urban landscape of Chicago, a representation of the elevated tracks, highways bridges and cranes so prevalent in his hometown.
ABOUT METROPOLITAN CAPITAL BANK
Metropolitan Capital Bank is located in the North Annex of the historic Tree Studios, a workshop to many of Chicago’s artists over the past century. The Bank’s 2004 renovation restored many of the North Annex studios’ historic architectural qualities of this property to their original beauty, featuring terra cotta reliefs, period finishes, 18-ft. ceilings. In addition to preserving the physical building, Met Cap maintains a strong commitment to exhibit Chicago artists in a progressive corporate art exhibition program. This exhibition series is curated by Nixon Art Associates, Inc., an independent art advisor. |
